Winter in Sevastopol
I like
winter. This season brings us a lot of festivals. My favorite celebration is
New Year’s Day!
On New Year’s
Eve my father, brother and I decorate our New Year’s tree.
My mother usually
cooks special delicious dishes in the kitchen. I often help her.
Then we have
festive supper and organize some funny games and competitions. We enjoy making
New Year’s wishes and telling fortunes.
At 12 o’clock
we always watch fireworks display. Some people go downtown to watch the
firework. But we usually stay at home as it is seen from our windows. We always
have a great time.
I think it is
a fantastic holiday. And I like it very much!
The Way Our Family Celebrates New Year’s Eve.
Hello, I’m Matvey.
I am 12 years old and I live in the beautiful city of Sevastopol. Now I’m going
to tell you how our family celebrates New Year’s Eve.
In Russia we begin to celebrate
New Year’s Day on December 31(New Year’s Eve) and continue on January 1. We
have a lot of free time on winter holidays.
Before New Year’s Day our family
makes some preparations. Dad does shopping. Mum makes some special dishes.
Grandma makes toffee apples and banana pie. As for me, I make decorations in
our flat.
After that we wait for guests and have festive
meals. Then we exchange gifts. I like this tradition very much. Finally there
is an exciting fireworks display on the balcony. It is always fun!
At the
night all the members of our family watch New Year’s programs on TV. But I
prefer playing computer games with my friends. Everybody has a great time!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!
OLD NEW YEAR
(by Anastasia, 6b)
Every year, at the night from
January 13 to January 14, we enjoy celebrating the so-called Old New Year – a
feast and for many people an independent holiday helping to prolong the joy and
pleasure of the winter holidays. It is the second opportunity to celebrate the New Year, which falls on January 14th
according to the old Orthodox calendar.
We usually
celebrate Old New Year with family and it is much quieter than January 1st..
This celebration falls on the Day of St. Basil
the Great, also known as “ generous”. On
this day people wear new, elegant clothes, enjoy a rich table, go to visit
friends or relatives and have fun.
One of the Old
New Year traditions is going from house to house and singing ritual carols to wish
happiness, peace and prosperity.
Telling fortunes is a folk tradition observed by unmarried girls.
There is a superstition that if in the coming New Year, the first person
to enter the house is a man – the year will be successful, if it is a woman the
year will be unlucky.
So it is better not to believe in
superstitions.
Happy Old New Year!
